LandShark Landing is a little beach bar next to the Margaritaville Hotel on Pensacola Beach. Well… it’s a little beach bar that was just named one of the “Top 50 Beach Bars in the World” by CNN Travel. That’s WORLD people! Number 24 to be exact.

It’s part of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville empire and it definitely has that son of a sailor feel. A Parrot Head’s paradise. There’s live music and a big open-air bar area with food and drinks. You can order a frozen Bama Breeze or a LandShark Lager or, of course, a margarita. And if you get the munchies, you can get, among other things, a Cheeseburger in Paradise.

And there’s a big beach area with picnic tables and games and chairs and hammocks. The place is laid all the way back. If you’re into the Buffett scene, you’ll feel right at home at LandShark. But really, even if you’re not, it’s still a cool place to kick back and relax.

My favorite quote about LandShark is under the photo in the story. “It gave up trying to be cool — and that’s when we fell in love with it.” Love it.

The rankings are here on CNN Travel.

UPDATE: The fine folks at Emerald Coast Tours pointed that another famous bar down the road (which also has Buffett connections) is also on the list. The Flora-Bama comes in at number 17. It is a special place.

A music festival smack dab in the middle of Pensacola Beach?! Sign me up. For the past few years, DeLuna Fest has given us a Summertime beach party. Three days and nights on four outdoor stages. From big names to local bands, from has-beens to hoping-to-bes, and everything in between.

Festival Style

Festival Style

It’s anything but a relaxing weekend at the beach. It’s loud, it’s crowded, it’s expensive, and it’s hot. Which, depending on your point of view and personal taste, makes it either heaven or hell. For me it’s been heaven. I love live music, I love photographing live music and did I mention, it’s on the beach! I mean come on, dancing in the sand to the Zac Brown Band?! They’ll be plenty of time for relaxing later. :-)

But the future of the festival seems to be in question. Organizers have had some, shall we say, “issues” in the past couple of years and there’s competition down the road from Hangout Fest in Gulf Shores (also pretty cool) so I’m not entirely sure DeLuna Fest will be back.

We used to have Spring Fest in downtown Pensacola a few years ago and I had a good time there but it didn’t last. Putting on an event this big with this many moving parts is a huge challenge. But hopefully DeLuna Fest will be able to work out the problems and find a way to stick around.

Well that’s pretty cool. Trip Advisor’s list of the Best Beaches in the World just came out and the Gulf Islands National Seashore in beautiful Pensacola, Florida checks in at number 18. That’s right. WORLD! But of course we already knew how great our beaches are and would probably bump ourselves up a few notches on the list. :-)

The full list is here.

UPDATE TO YESTERDAY”S POST: New information has just come in on the Jail Bird case.

While out shooting the other morning, I came across this exotic, flamboyant, colorful creature and he had this beautiful bird with him. The bird’s name was Opus and his owner was called Cutter John. Opus had a lot to say about Jimmy the Neck. They met at the local watering hole where Jimmy was known by yet another alias; Frasier.

Turns out, Opus is past president and present party-planner of the Panhandle Parrot Heads. (It may sound like a demotion but in the Parrot Heads, party-planner outranks president. Also, the Panhandle Parrot Heads are not to be confused with the Pensacola Parrot Heads who split from the group after the great saltine vs ritz debate of 2003.)

Anyway, while at a club meeting, Opus heard Frasier pulled off quite a coup before flying the coop. He got involved with a local sports star known for running cock fights and fixed a fight by convincing one of the birds to take a dive. He made a killing on that one and along with his brother Niles, decided it was time to head south. Opus also said the boat was just a red herring. They ditched the boat a few miles out and left on a wheelchair powered by helium filled balloons. Weird story but Opus said he was just repeating exactly what he had heard.

(OK, just to be clear, as far as I know, the man’s name is not Cutter John and the bird’s name is not Opus. I forgot to ask. He rides his bike around the beach with the parrot happily riding along. On this morning, he was kind enough to stop and let me take his picture and even asked if I wanted the bird to spread his wings. (This was not his first rodeo.) I said sure. That would be great. He gave a signal and the bird spread his wings wide for the shot. I was so excited by it I just said thank you and let him ride off without getting his name. Very un-Jimmy Olson. So actually, they could be Cutter John and Opus but what are the odds.)

WANTED: The authorities need your help apprehending this dangerous criminal.

James G. Heron, (a.k.a. Jimmy the Neck; a.k.a. The Birdman of Alcaniz; a.k.a. Larry) is wanted for masterminding numerous bird brained schemes, fronting several shady, fly by night organizations and fishing without a license. His most recent offense involves allegations he used his political office to feather his own nest, although he claims it’s a vast panhandle media conspiracy.

He was last spotted near Palafox Pier in downtown Pensacola. Apparently aware that the police would be watching the skies, he chooses an unusual escape route. He arrives at his boat and casually checks out the area.

Always cool and collected, he even takes the time to apply sunscreen to those hard to reach places,

before hoisting the sail and heading out to sea. If you spot James, call the authorities immediately. He is unarmed but can still put your eye out, so approach with caution.

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos

My favorite new addition to the city came to town in the Spring of 2012. The Pensacola Blue Wahoos (AA affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) play in a gorgeous waterfront stadium in beautiful downtown Pensacola. Somehow it made the city feel a little bigger and a little cozier at the same time.

I was mildly interested but not overly excited about the new team when I heard they were coming. The Pensacola Pelicans (An unaffiliated team in an independent league.) were in town for a few years and I went to some games and had a good time but it was nothing to write a blog about. But the Wahoos, that’s a different story.

From the moment I walked into the stadium, it felt like something special. I absolutely LOVE being there for games. I lost count of how many we went to last year and can’t wait for the new season to start.

And it’s not just about baseball. (Even though the baseball is very good.) It’s about having a good time and relaxing, sitting in the stands overlooking the bay, having a cold beverage and  laughing and cheering with a few thousand close friends on a warm Summer night.

And tickets are cheap. But unlike a lot of minor league teams, the Wahoos do sell out pretty often, so get them ahead of time to make sure you get in. (Official Site)
