The Beach Cross

Pensacola Beach Cross

The cross is about 10 feet tall and sits high on a dune overlooking the Gulf out on the island. It’s been through every hurricane we’ve had since I’ve lived here and as far as I can tell, it hasn’t budged. Some people may be inclined to read something into that.

The cross was placed on the island to commemorate the location of the first Catholic Mass in the United States. Pensacola Beach was the site of that Mass over 450 years ago and the Knights of Columbus erected the cross not far from where it is now in 1959. I can’t find an exact date but it was moved to its current location atop the dune a few years after that.

As you can see, I’ve shot the cross quite a few times. Makes for a nice subject in front of the constantly changing beautiful beach sky.

  1. Spectacular images — thanks!

  2. I remember the time it was moved. I’ve been here a long time. It always makes me think above and beyong my simple self. Makes me want to compose a soundscape about this landmark and its impact through time on the people that see it.
